MICHAEL SCHMIDT YACHTBAU

Welcome to this first newsletter of Michael Schmidt Yachtbau (MSY), a young company with a brand-new facility but decades of experience. We will be sending this letter out five times a year to people and companies related to or working in the marine industry… Do please share with anyone you feel might be interested as we have a great story to tell at MSY!

History in the making

Most readers will be very familiar with Michael Schmidt, one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the marine industry. After starting his new company in 2014, Michael built a yacht called the Brenta 80DC, designed to set a new standard for fast cruising sailing yachts. The goal of this beautiful boat – which you can read more about here – was to shake up a market that has fallen behind in terms of innovation over the past decade.

The Brenta 80DC has been very well received by the yachting media and was a big hit at various boat shows. Encouraged by this response and convinced that he has the right product for the newly developing market in fast sailing boats between 70 and 100 ft, Michael proceeded with his plans to build a shipyard (see below).

He has also assembled a passionate team at MSY, including the new managing director Johannes Malzahn who has a rich experience of boatbuilding and is a committed sailor. Also on board at the yard is purchasing manager Andreas Bock, a successful racer on both water and ice, and marketing and sales director for Tijl Hetterschijt, another passionate sailor with long distance cruising experience. Everything is in place for a bright future…

New yard opens doors

Our new state-of-the-art construction facility in Greifswald, Germany, was officially opened on December 20. The temperature-controlled yard has been custom-designed for building carbon sailing yachts between 20 and 30 metres in length. It covers over 3000 m² of floor space and 500 m² of offices, and includes a fully equipped 30-metre spray cabin and a 30-metre oven for composites which can reach temperatures of up to 90 degrees.

These sophisticated premises reflect MSY’s ambitions for the future and will eventually enable us to build between four and six yachts simultaneously using the latest equipment. The hall has sufficient height clearance to allow boats of up to 30 metres to be handled inside with their keel already mounted. We also have an 80-tonne boat transporter to allow us to offer service and refit work.

The new facility is directly located in a deepwater location so all projects can be directly launched once completed. The first hull is already in the facility and a second new build will follow in April 2017.

New Brenta 80 under construction

The first fruits of our new yard will be a 24.40-metre yacht called the Brenta 80 SRD (SRD is short for semi-raised deck saloon). This is part of a new line designed by Lorenzo Argento and a follow-up to our successful Brenta 80 DC. The new model benefits from all the experience gained on the first Brenta 80 DC Cool Breeze, which has covered some 18,000 miles in the past year, including two transatlantic crossings.

Designed to allow owners to enjoy every aspect of their time on board, the Brenta 80 SRD is a natural progression from the Brenta 80 DC. A key focus as we developed this fast and comfortable yacht was to keep all systems understandable and reduce complexity. Featuring an interior from the UK-based Design Unlimited, the first model is being built for a family with three children who will mostly sail without a skipper.

Keeping the boat simple does not only apply to the systems but also, for instance, in finding the right natural light balance within the interior. While the below deck areas should still feel open and inviting, reducing the amount of window surface area where possible can allow the use of air-conditioning to be kept to a minimum.

Built in carbon with a lightweight interior, construction of this first Brenta 80 SRD is due to be completed by May and the boat will be handed over in time for the early summer sailing season.

Other future projects explained at Boot Dusseldorf

The MSY boat show team look forward to meeting you at Boot Dusseldorf, which runs from 21 to 29 January. You’ll find our stand at Hall 16 C75 where we will happily give you more information on the new Brenta 80 SRD and share details on a new 72 ft explorer sailing yacht that we are currently building. This research vessel, which will be ready for delivery in the spring of 2018 to a major German scientific institution, will be used to study water quality all over the world. Also in Dusseldorf we can give you a sneak preview of our plans for a 70 ft fast cruising sailing yacht, due to be unveiled in February. This boat will also hit the water in spring 2018. We are not working with a dealer network and welcome everybody who is able to introduce clients to us and start a fruitful collaboration.

We know that Boot Dusseldorf is huge and your time short: if you’d like to make an appointment in advance mail us here and we’ll set a time and date to suit your schedule. You can also call during the show on +31 6 57949391 / Tijl Hetterschijt.
